Every song has a story behind it. Sometimes the stories are exciting and hopeful. Sometimes they are heart wrenching and full of questions. In Let My Soul Surrender, beloved singer Rickie Byars Beckwith tells the fascinating stories behind each of the songs on her companion CD, also titled Let My Soul Surrender: Grace Notes of a Journey.
What makes my first book so special is that I had to put on the clothes of a writer. It's not like I was not a writer all along, but in this project, I accepted the voice inside of me. I let go of the chatter in my head that measured my gifts against those of others. MY story is what I wanted to share. I realized that I could do this book my way. I wanted photographs and paintings that would support the stories that needed to jump off the page. I wanted people to feel what I feel when I write a song. I wanted them to know what is moving in me when a melody or harmony gets my attention. I wanted people to meet a part of me they had never heard or seen.
Award winning photographers Bonnie Schiffman, Carl Studna; incredible fashion designers, House of SITA, Wilbourn Sisters; and Dudley Declaime Perkins, a celebrated MC whose talents as visual artist are not known to the world. All of this and a GREAT cd is what the hoopla is all about!
And the music on this cd is so special for so many reasons. I grew up. I finally could feel myself as an artist. I truly accepted that I get to be me this time! I've been recording for many years with incredible producers but this time, I knew what I wanted to feel and I stood for my ideas. I loved working with Larry Fergusson and John Barnes a very dear friend and genius producer.
